It’s almost that time of the year again – The CrossFit Open will start for us at GEO on Friday 22 February. For 5 weeks we get to put our training to the test and see how we stack up against our former selves, against each other, and against the wider CrossFit community.
Whilst it is a legit competition comprised of hundreds of thousands of CrossFitters worldwide, for the majority of participants it is not the prospect of beating others and progressing to the next stage of competition that drives them, but instead, the opportunity it gives them to rise to the challenge and grow as a result.
Just like people who run for fitness will enter the City to Surf or the Blackmores Half Marathon to test themselves, we as CrossFitters can use The Open to do the same.
It’s an experience that allows us to see what we are made of. Just like with all CrossFit workouts, the intensity with which we push ourselves determines how hard it is. We can take it nice and easy if we want, but where’s the fun in that? It’s when we push ourselves outside of our comfort zones that the true magic happens. We find out how mentally tough we are. We find out what we are capable of. We find out that we can actually do more than what we thought previously.
The Open is an experience that we get to share with our community. The guys and girls that we train with weekly become brothers and sisters in arms. We walk into battle together. We support and encourage each other. We want to see each other succeed. That energy is contagious and is addictive. It creates bonds and forges respect. It inspires us all to be better.
This all sounds grand and maybe even a bit overwhelming. It is hard to put into words what it all means and how it will make you feel. All I can say is that you should just take part in it.
Regardless of if you are a hardcore athlete or someone who just trains for fun; if you have been doing this for years or only for days; if you are old or young; trim or overweight – the experience of participating in the Open at your level is something special that you will be proud of, I promise.
All workouts can be scaled so don’t stress about not being able to do everything. And if you need to scale or modify workouts for whatever reason, that is cool too. At the end of the day, you just do the best you can.

We will be running the Open workouts at GEO every Friday night from 5.15pm onwards, and again during all of the regular classes on the following Monday. The first workout will be on Friday 22 February.
If you have any questions at all, please feel free to speak to any of the Coaches or any of the many members who have participated in previous years.
